How to Connect to the Internet

There are many ways of connecting to the Internet from PPC or Smartphones
Here you will find the most common ways of doing it: via GPRS, ActiveSync, or Wi-Fi.

GPRS connection

Smartphone WM 5.0

Every network connection is different. You should gather all of the relevant information or network settings you need before starting this process.

  1. Press Start > Settings > Connections.
  2. Click GPRS.
  3. Click Menu > Add.
  4. Enter the following information, and click Done.
    • In Description, enter a name for the connection.
    • In Connects to, select the type of network to which you will connect.
    • In Access point, enter the access point name.
    • In User name, enter your user name for the GPRS network, if required.
    • In Password, enter your password, if required.
    • In Primary DNS, enter the primary Domain Name System (DNS) address, if required.
    • In Secondary DNS, enter the secondary DNS address, if required.
    • In IP address, enter the Internet Protocol (IP) address for the device, if required.

The Smartphone uses this connection when you open a program that connects to the Internet.

Pocket PC WM 5.0

Before you begin, obtain the following information from your Internet service provider (ISP) or wireless service provider: ISP server phone number or access point, user name, and password.

  1. Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab.
  2. Tap Connections, and in My ISP add a new modem connection.
  3. Enter the name for connection.
  4. Click Select a modem > Cellular Line (GPRS).
  5. Enter the following information, and click Done.
    • In Access point, enter the access point name.
    • In User name, enter your user name for the GPRS network, if required.
    • In Password, enter your password, if required.
    • In Domain, enter the primary Domain Name System (DNS) address, if required.
    • Click Advanced to manually set IP and alternative DNS, if required
  6. To start the connection, begin using the desired program. For example, switch to Internet Explorer Mobile and browse the Internet. Your device will connect automatically. To manually start a connection, tap and hold the connection, and tap Connect.

The Pocket PC uses this connection when you open a program that connects to the Internet.

Smartphone WM 2003

Before you begin, obtain the following information from your Internet service provider (ISP) or wireless service provider: ISP server phone number or access point, user name, and password.

  1. Press Start > Settings > Data connections.
  2. Press Menu > Edit connections > GPRS connections.
  3. Press Menu > Add
  4. Enter the following information, and click Done.
    • In Description, enter a name for the connection.
    • In Connects to, choose Internet.
    • In Access point, enter the access point name.
    • In User name, enter your user name for the GPRS network, if required.
    • In Password, enter your password, if required.
    • In Primary DNS, enter the primary Domain Name System (DNS) address, if required.
    • In Secondary DNS, enter the secondary DNS address, if required.
    • In IP address, enter the Internet Protocol (IP) address for the device, if required.

The Smartphone uses this connection when you open a program that connects to the Internet.

ActiveSync connection

Before you begin, make sure your desktop or laptop is connected to Internet (you can check it by running Internet Explorer) and you have the latest version of Microsoft ActiveSync installed.

  1. Connect your Pocket PC or Smartphone to your desktop/laptop via USB.
  2. If ActiveSync doesn't start automatically, start it manually.
  3. Open ActiveSync and click File > Connection Settings.
  4. In the field This computer connected to: choose Internet.

Wi-Fi connection

Before you begin, obtain the following information from your wireless service provider: DNS server phone number or access point, user name, and password, and IP, if required.

To set up a wireless network connection to your ISP, add a new connection in Network Cards. Note that your device may say Wireless Ethernet instead of Network Cards.

  1. Start Comm Manager by clicking Start > Programs > Comm manager.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon to activate your Wi-Fi.
  3. Tap Settings in Comm Manager window and choose Wi-Fi Settings.
  4. Tap Advanced tab and press Renew IP.
  5. If you cannot connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, contact your device manufacturer for additional information.

Smartphone WM 5.0

Every network connection is different. You should gather all of the relevant information or network settings you need before starting this process.

  1. Press Start > Settings > Connections.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi Settings > Wi-Fi.
  3. Press Menu > Turn on Wi-fi.
  4. Choose the necessary connection from the list and press Connect.
